Blue Nose Memories Special thanks to Chris Woodbury for sharing this wonderful reflection on what it means to be a runner. Back Pack Running written by Chris Woodbury Three years ago, I put on my grey jammy pants, dug my tennis sneakers out of the closet, and showed up for a learn-to-run program at my local Sports facility. The instructor had her work cut out for her, but somehow she accomplished the impossible and made me into a runner. I am 49 years old and I am a “back pack runner”. This does not mean that I run with a backpack on my back. It means that I run enthusiastically and very slowly in the back of the running pack. I run with lots of other back pack runners as well. We are a special and unique group of people. We run for various reasons and we all have our own goals. Mine is usually to finish before the coffee is gone or before they take down the clock. You can tell we are back pack runners by our attitudes. We are the ones who are chatting to the supporters on the sidewalks and singing the songs the bands play. We are the ones running with our heads up looking at the flowers and reading all the signs in the parks. We are ones who stop to pat your dogs. We appreciate your landscaping and the colors you paint your houses. We are the ones who appreciate every minute we are out there on the route because we are the ones who are out there longer than anybody else. People run for many different reasons. I run because I love the people I run with and I want to meet more. I run because my husband and dog run with me and my children run too. I run because our city is an incredibly beautiful place full of wonderful places to see (who can ever get tired of feeling the ocean breezes off our many waterfront trails and sidewalks?). I run because it makes me feel alive and it calms my spirit. I run because I love it and because I can. Last week in the Bluenose, I ran the slowest 10K I have ever run in my life. Despite my slow time, I had the “best time” ever. I ran with a great friend, I met new people, I shared the triumphs of my running buddies, listened to their stories and for one more glorious day, I was part of the running community of Halifax. I am living proof that everyone can run. I am living proof that everyone can run a race. Running is not just for the accomplished few, the athletically gifted or the young. I am none of these. If you start slowly and keep your goals realistic, then anybody can run or walk just about any distance. Come join me at the back of the pack. There is always room for one more. It’s where all the great stuff happens. Happy running, Christine Woodbury Club News & Reminders Got news to share, drop us a line. Sunday Runs Reminder: Just a friendly reminder that we welcome all runners to participate in our Java Blend after-run coffee and bagel socials on Sunday and to not forget about the Loonie (now Toonie) Bin (which helps buy the bagels) and to help out with some of the clean up.
