February 2010 UpdateHRC Annual General Meeting - Sunday Feb. 28 Join us on Sun, Feb 28 after the group run for our Annual General Meeting. We expect the meeting to start around 11 am. In addition to covering the 2009 club activities, finances, and formally electing the board, the AGM is also an opportunity for all members to provide input, ask questions and offer to be part of the volunteer board. Interested in taking on a volunteer role with Halifax Running Club? We're always looking to get more members involved. To learn more about the club, how it's managed, who is on the current Board of Directors and the volunteer roles read our Club Governance document. And if you're interested in taking on a volunteer role or helping out with the club contact Dianne Chiasson. Member Views: Favorite Races This month we asked members to share their favourite race. Here's what you shared: "My favorite has got to be the New York City Marathon. Great energy, great crowds, awesome experience." (Darcy Stephens) "My favorite run is the 'Not Since Moses'. It is a unique running experience." (Betty Hutchings) "Big Sur Marathon comes out on top. It is truly the most beautiful course in the world. Great music, drums, dancers. Free beer at the end. My 2nd favorite is the Chicago Marathon. Everybody knows Chicgao. Flat and fast, very exciting crowds. The spectators are on your side all the way. Superbly organized. Also has free beer at the end. You have to do it. It's a club rule." (Robin Whyte) "I have a few favorite runs. Honoloulu Marathon was amazing - it's pretty cool running up a volcano. I liked Chicago Marathon because it flat and fast, and the crowds were amazing. I like the Berwick 5-miler because it's a miler, because it's flat and fast. And, of course, the Lung Run 5 km is one of my all-time favorites. It's flat and fast....and of course, Louis organizes it". (Yvette Scattolon) "The run that stands out for me is the 'Not Since Moses' in Five Islands, NS. - It's 10km and it's a rough, challenging run. Running on the ocean floor, running to beat the tide. It's a run so unique and one-of-a-kind. I love the fact that the run spans so many different terrains in such a short distance....water, sand, gravel, rocks, moguls, hills, muck and mud....all amidst some of the most spectacular scenery. It truly is a great event....and fun too!" (Dale Armstrong) Next month's question: What do you eat before your race? Share your views. Curling Event - Fri, Mar 19 Mark your calendars for Friday March 19 from 7pm-9pm at the Halifax Curling Club. We’re planning a Friday night curling event for members, friends and family. There will be 5 main routes (Peninsula Halifax, Dartmouth, Clayton Park, Bedford Highway, Dingle/Fleming Park). An objective with all the new routes is offer various options for distance and to use a common start which enables everyone to run the first 5-10km together. Routes will be set up on www.runningmap.com for club members to view. Special thanks to Randall Hipson and Brian Doiron for their work on this project. Blue Nose Marathon - Volunteers Wanted Who better to look after runners after a marathon then fellow runners? If you're planning to be around Blue Nose weekend and are not running, Ava Czapalay may have a job for you. Ava is co-chairing Runner Services and needs volunteers for various roles. The Blue Nose Marathon is Nova Scotia’s largest running event and is scheduled for May 21-23. Volunteers are still needed for all areas including Runner’s Services. To sign up as a volunteer visit the marathon site and click on “volunteers”. For more information on volunteering for Runner’s Services, contact Ava Czapalay. In addition to the volunteer request for Runner Services, the Halifax Running Club will once again manage the water stops for the Youth Run on Saturday and we'll be looking for volunteers to help with that too! Olympic Moments A few lucky HRC members have had the opportunity to experience the 2010 Olympics first hand. Mike Kennedy won a competition through his employer, Deloitte Touche, where he had to explain why he should go to the Olympics and carry the torch. Mike's creative juices flowed and he put together a music video to a song he, himself, wrote about the under-represented white collar sports. His submission won him a trip to the Olympics! Way to go, Mike. Club member, Michelle McTimoney, is at the Olympics as part of the Short Track Speed Skating medical support team. Hope we won't slow you down to much when you get back Michelle! Have you renewed your HRC Membership for 2010? For those of you who have not yet renewed, we are extending our “early bird” renewal offer to February 28th so that you may take advantage of the great year-long benefits our club sponsors have offered to our members.
