HRC Housewarming Party-Friday Nov 6

Please join us in a housewarming party for our new location on Friday November 6 from 7-10 pm at the Halifax Curling Club. This event is open to all HRC members, friends, family and anyone in the running community. There will be munchies, a cash bar available and a few door prizes. We'll also bring our own music but if you're musically-inclined and want to try out the stage, we'll be happy to open it up for you. The club is located at 948 South Bland Street (off Inglis Street).

World Run Day – Sunday Nov 8

World Run Day is a running event held annually in November as a day to celebrate running and charitable giving. It is recognized as both the International Day of Running and the International Day of Charity. Check out the website.

In honour of World Run Day, join us in celebrating the event as part of our club run Sunday Nov 8. This will be a great opportunity for runners to join us for a friendly run through Halifax. We will use our usual running routes and distances as we celebrate the sport.

Along with running, we will be donating our toonie bin and collecting donations for Kidsport™ - a national children's charitable program that helps kids overcome the financial barriers preventing or limiting their participation in organized sport. We'll also collect sneakers for other charities. So if you have an older pair of sneakers that still can deliver a few miles for someone who needs them, please bring them to the club on Nov 8 and we'll get them delivered to St. Andrews Church. Learn more about Kidsport.

He got the medal. She got the ring.

Maybe there was something in the gatorade at the PEI marathon - wedding bells will soon be ringing for a few HRC members. Congratulations to Brigitte Sabourin and Mike French who got engaged after the PEI marathon. Word has it that Mike ran the entire marathon (his first one) carrying the ring. Congratulations also to Louis Dionne and Kari Ellen Graham who have also decided to tie the knot! We wish you all the best!

Considering Boston 2010?

If you are considering running the 2010 Boston Marathon, you better register very soon. The word from the BAA is that the marathon is selling quickly and it might sell-out by the end of November or December.

Congratulations to Brendan Ryan!

Brendan will be travelling to Ottawa to receive the prestigious award Meritious Service Medal for his service as the commanding officer of Her Majesty's Canadian Ship, Iroquois, and the deputy commander of Task Force Arabian Sea from April to October 2008. Brendan's command ensured the ship and Task Force's success throughout the deployment while providing expert advice and guidance to allies during this international leadership role. We feel safer for just having you in the club Brendan, congratulations!

Members Survey

In the next week or so, we'll be conducting another short members survey. The survey will be online and we'll send out a link when it's ready. We value your suggestions and feedback, so please let us know how we're doing.

A1 Thanks

Special thanks to all the staff at A1 for hosting HRC to a great member night in October. There were some great deals and lots of great conversation.

HRC Steering Committee

Interested in taking on a volunteer role with Halifax Running Club? We're always looking to get more members involved. The Steering Committee is made of a president, vice-president (or in our current case two co-presidents), secretary and treasurer. The Committee is supported by a Board of Directors who take on a variety of other roles. To learn more about the club, how it's managed, who is on the current Board of Directors and the volunteer roles read our Club Governance document. And if you're interested in taking on a volunteer role or helping out with the club contact Dianne Chiasson.

HRC Jackets!

We've placed the order for new running jackets. They're expected to be in by the end of November. We did order a few extra so if you haven't placed an order but think you want one, let us know. The cost is $70.

In addition to the jackets, we have also ordered a new fleece hat from Sugoi which we'll have available for sale in November. They'll make great Christmas gifts. Stay tuned for details. And just a reminder that we do have a number of shirts, fleece pullovers and nylon running hats available for sale. These are pictured on our order form. Ready to order? Complete and print the order form and bring it to the club or email Erin McDonah.

HRC Membership Renewals

We will soon be starting up our 2010 HRC membership drive. Due to our new location, we have incurred a slight increase to our operating expenses. Our membership dues for 2010 will also increase slightly to $50 per year. We expect to deliver another full package of membership benefits. The 2010 membership drive will begin in December. Stay tuned for updates on membership news and benefits.

Running Tips

Marathon & Beyond: If you're into ultras or like reading about them, Frank MacGillvray has notified us that Atlantic News (5660 Morris St. - 429-5468) have brought in copies of a magazine - Marathon and Beyond - which is dedicated to Marathons and Ultra Marathons. The articles are quite in-depth and much longer than the "one-pagers" you see, in the general running zines. It prints only six times a year.

Wet Sneakers:: Since we have had a little bit of wet weather, here is one sneaker tip. One of the fastest way to dry out wet sneakers is to stuff them with newspaper. Just let them sit and presto - your sneakers are good as new.

Got another tip to pass on, We're always looking for good ideas.

Cleaning up at HRC

We like to be a club that provides equal opportunity volunteer duties and so in that spirit send a friendly reminder to all members to feel free to lend a hand for the clean up after the Sunday runs. We're going to start a two-wave clean-up schedule to help ease the work that's left for anyone who stays behind to close up the club on Sundays.

The first wave will start around 10:30 - when most runners are back from a run, already enjoyed their first bagel and are getting ready to leave for the day. So how can you help?

1. Rinse your plate (especially if it has lots of gooey peanut butter and jam on it) in the sink and then stack it in one of the dishwasher racks.
2. Place coffee mugs or any other glasses and utensils in one of the dish racks.
3. Empty out the coffee grounds in the basket of the coffee percolator in one of the large garbage cans and bags.
4. Keep the kitchen as organized as possible and start to do some of the pre-cleanup - e.g. wipe up the counters, put away one of the toasters, clean up and close up the jars of peanut butter, jam etc.
5. If the dish racks are full, run the dishwasher (it's fun!). To get started, first pull down the metal door to put a few mm of water in the bottom of the washer. Open the door back up and slide the dish rack in. Pull the handle down one more time and leave it to work through the clean cycle. It takes 2-3 min to complete. When it stops, pull the rack over to the side and check the dishes. You can leave them to drip dry for a few minutes and/or start drying them off and putting them away.

The second wave of clean up will begin after 11 - allowing time for runners who are out for a long run to finish up and still enjoy a coffee and bagel. Since this is usually a smaller group, the clean up should be much easier. Basically finish cleaning up the kitchen, put away all fridge items in the fridge, bagels in the freezer, empty the coffee pot and rinse it out, empty the garbage cans in the kitchen and bathrooms, put away boxes and toasters in the back shelf by the fridge.

And just a reminder, we have moved our cups and mugs from our old Cunard St. location to the curling club. These mugs are bigger and better for enjoying a cup o' java after your run. They are now stored in the long cupboard just before you enter the kitchen (just on your left).

We'll post the clean-up duty list in the kitchen to help keep things organized. Thanks to everyone who have been helping to pitch in for the past few weeks - as the saying goes, many hands makes light work!
