January 2010 Update

First 10 of '10

Chef Louis and team served up another fantastic breakfast! Thank you to all who participated in this year's First 10 of '10 and for making it another successful event. Although the running conditions were less than ideal, we braved the elements and made the best of it...and the french toast was worth it. A huge thank you to the Brills Grill Team - Louis, Yvette, Jenn, Dave, Mike, Roy, Dianne and Shelley who cooked and served us a delicious breakfast.

KidsFest Funds: Thanks to your generous toonie bin contributions, we raised $225.80 for KidsFest - a program that promotes reading and running to children living at or below the poverty line. Aerobics First was so impressed with this support, they immediately matched it. So in total we helped contribute $450 to the Halifax-Dartmouth KidsFest programs which will help keep 80 kids reading and running through 2010.

Stay tuned for Brian's pics from the day.

Member Views: January is Goal Month

Happy New Year! As we enter the next year, we have polled a few HRC members to see what their running goals are for 2010. After all, runners are always chasing goals, right? Here's what they said:
"Stay injury free."
"Achieve PB's in 10 k and half marathon.
"Run in 75% of the RNS races."
"Rediscover my love for running, enjoy it, and be able to run consistently throughout the year."
"Run a 1:45 half-marathon, a 45min 10km, and a marathon under 4 hours."
"Keep on running."

Next month's question: What's your favourite race and why? Share your views.

Member Satisfaction Survey

Our member satisfaction survey is now complete. In total we received 58 completed surveys which represents a response rate of just over 40% of our membership. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share ideas and input. Your feedback will help guide the ongoing development, planning and activities for the Halifax Running Club. Below are a few highlights:

91% of members indicated they were somewhat or very satisfied with the club and satisfaction with the club activities is strong across many components.

Key areas of importance for members include: weekly group runs, opportunity to meet and socialize with other members, opportunity to train with other runners of a similar pace, value members get from their membership, Sunday post-run socials and club communications. We know one of the ongoing challenges is how to best structure Sunday runs so runners of all speeds and distances can make the most of their Sunday running experience. If you have specific ideas to share on this front, please let Darcy Stephens know.

We'll share more detailed results at our upcoming Annual General Meeting. In the meantime the Club's Board of Directors is reviewing the survey results and member comments to identify opportunities where we can better meet needs. As a volunteer member-based organization, we not only welcome suggestions but will also encourage members to champion ideas from suggestions to solutions.

Winter Running - Rules for the Road

Running in the winter has its challenges. We need to dress for the weather. We're often running when it's dark - early mornings or after work. And we're dealing with slush, ice and snow, which makes for tricky footing and narrower sidewalks. As we gear up for another season of winter running, we thought we'd share a few tips and reminders to help protect your safety and the safety of others who share the roads.

  • Share the pathway. Like cars on a road, runners and walkers should stay to the right of a shared pathway, so those approaching can pass on the left.
  • Single file, or two abreast. This will allow you to share the sidewalk and adjust your position easily, should you encounter an oncoming cyclist, fellow runner or walker.
  • Run against traffic. On the road, run against traffic, so you can observe approaching vehicles. Respect the flow of traffic and move out of the way if necessary.
  • Alert your group. Those at the front of the group need to alert others of oncoming obstacles. Simply shout "Runner!" or "Ice!" and make the appropriate move to allow safe passage.
  • Alert others in front of you before you make a move to pass them. Failing to give proper warning could startle them and cause an accident. Shout "On your left" as you pass, so they know to stay to the right.
  • Ensure you are visible when it's dark. Wear reflective clothing and vests, and use reflective tape.
  • Leave word of your route. Write down or let someone know where you plan to run or walk, and how long you expect to be gone.
  • Carry identification. Carry identification and a quarter in case you need to make a phone call.
  • Be careful with that iPod. If you love to run or walk to music, stay safe and keep the volume down so you can hear your surroundings.
  • Use common sense and be respectful.

HRC Steering Committee

Interested in taking on a volunteer role with Halifax Running Club? We're always looking to get more members involved. The Steering Committee is made of a president, vice-president (or in our current case two co-presidents), secretary and treasurer. The Committee is supported by a Board of Directors who take on a variety of other roles. To learn more about the club, how it's managed, who is on the current Board of Directors and the volunteer roles read our Club Governance document. And if you're interested in taking on a volunteer role or helping out with the club contact Dianne Chiasson.
