March 2010 UpdateBoston Bound We have an impressive contingent of members, friends and family members headed to Boston this year for the 114th Boston Marathon. Boston is the oldest and most storied marathon in the world. It's a race of lengends -- Johnny Miles, Alberto Salazar, Dick Beardsley, Bill Rodgers, Katherine Switzer, Joan Benoit and Robert Cheruiyot. This year's marathon is a bit of a family affair for a few HRC members. Randall Hipson will join his brothers Bryan (travelling from Germany) and Daniel (travelling Ontario) for the 26 mile journey. Mark Pothier will have the thrill of running with his father George. Geri Wallace will meet up with her brother-in-law Robert Little (travelling from Kuwait). Morag McDonah is Boston bound to cheer on daughter Ailsa (travelling from Alberta). We wish all members - past, present and friends and family all the best. Good luck to: Ava Czapalay, Andrew Dacanay, Bruce Gallagher, Darcy Stephens, Denise Mader, Denise Robson, George Pothier, Geri Wallace, Leo Kennedy, Lexi Juurlink, Lisa Cicchelli, Louis Brill, Marie-Claude Gregoire, Mark Pothier, Micheline McWhirter, Mike Juurlink, Minh Tan, Pat Kennedy, Rami Bardeesy, Randall Hipson, Ray Moorehead, Yvette Scattolon, Mike Fitzsimmons, Kari Ellen Graham, J P Brousseau, David Kachan and Annette Scott. Member Views: Pre-race fuel Now that race season is around the corner, we thought we'd ask members how they prepare for a race. This month we asked members to share their favourite pre-race meal. Here's what we heard: As much as I can. Usually a can of Heinz Spaghetti and couple slices of bread (for marathons). Power Bar for dessert. Talked to a nutritionist at an expo and asked her if you could "eat too much for breakfast?". She said: if you can keep it down, eat as much as you want. Should be two hours before race though. I'd like to think this has helped in not yet hitting "the wall", but if I actually said that, the Running Gods would quickly strike me down. (Frank McGillivray) I start my regime the day before the race and will have lunch at Subway, usually a steak or chicken sub on whole wheat so I get some protein and carbs. The night before I prefer whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce, some salad with bread and a glass of red wine, no later than 6:30 PM. The morning of the race I want oatmeal with a banana, coffee if available and I am good to go. (Member) Before most races which are usually morning races I have a banana, bowl of cereal with a small piece of dark chocolate mixed in and a large glass of juice usually orange. If the run is a bit later in the morning I will also snack on bagel or energy bar. (Leo Kennedy) I really do not have a specific recipe for what I eat before a race, but one thing for sure, I always eat a couple of bananas and I try to have a bowl of Raisin Bran and bagel. (Gerry Lessard) Next month's question: The next HRC question - Of course, after we're done our races, we often reward ourselves with a well-deserved meal. What is your favorite post-race meal?
