Members / Chit Chat / CO2 output of runners |

Anybody have any idea of CO2 output of an "average" runner on some sort of per capita basis, like per minute, per mile, etc.? I have an environmental statistics blog that I'd like to get that stat for and create some sort of environmental impact statistic for runners. http://envirostats.info I'm considering proposing a carbon tax for carbon offsetting for runners. JUST KIDDING! Please contact me if you have the info I seek. Thanks. Minh thetanmanwhocan@yahoo.ca |

Shaving the morning of the race: Razor burn + sweat= eeouch! I always shave the day before... I agree on the light shoes and shorts tho... and, despite the risk of offending any onlookers, losing the singlet, conditions permitting - not just lighter, but also cooler -rami |

Members / Running Tips / health risks of plastic fluid containers |
Aug 4th, 2006, 6:48pm |

BRIEFING NOTE ON HEALTH RISK OF PLASTIC FLUID CONTAINERS ISSUE: Potential health risks of water bottles made of plastic, including Nalgene bottles, and other plastic fluid containers like coffee mugs. BACKGROUND: - Plastics tend to contain unhealthy chemicals, often carcinogens, which can leach into the fluid containers of plastics hold. - Leaching increases with time & usage, especially if hot fluids or fluids mixing in the containers are involved as both wear away the plastic surface, allowing more chemicals in the plastic to dissolve into the fluid. - Plastics come labelled with a number from 1-7 in a triangular symbol, pending its chemical make-up [1], which can be used to distinguish plastics. - Nalgene bottles (#7 plastic), the supposed permanent replacement to the plastic water bottle, may not be safe itself. KEY POINTS: - #2, 4 and 5 plastics leach significantly less than others, and less harmful chemicals as well. - #1 plastic (i.e. Coke bottle) doesn’t leach much, but surface is more prone to bacterial growth than other plastics. - Nalgene bottles leach bis-phenol A (BPA), which causes high rates of birth defects in rats, and although human embryos are generally more fragile than those of rats [2,3], more evidence needs to be gathered to determine full effects on human embryos. This leaching effect should be noted with moderation as it is not known how effectively BPA infiltrates the human body to embryos or to cause other health risks. - Effective solutions on plastic fluid container management exist involving any kind of plastic used for fluid containers. RECOMMENDATIONS: In preferred order of application pending feasibility and/or convenience: 1. Use glass or stainless steel fluid containers instead of plastic; 2. Use #2, 4 or 5 plastic bottles, going through a couple of bottles a year if container is a true water bottle, changing bottles every couple of months if container was bought holding other fluids (i.e. juice bottle) and halving recommended time periods if hot fluids or mixing of fluids in bottles is done at least occasionally; 3. Change containers once in a few weeks, at longest, if using plastics other than #2, 4 or 5. General / News / Fast Company Basin Run - April 2 |
Mar 23rd, 2006, 9:50pm |
| Started by Clarence | Last post by Clarence |
Fast Company has done an annual run around the Bedford Basin on Easter Sunday for a number of years. For the past few years the Halifax Running Club has joined us for this run. We will be doing the run again this year, but we have rescheduled it to Sunday, April 2 due to the fact that the Dal Spring Tune-up 5K is on Easter Sunday this year (plus a number of our members will be away this Easter). We plan on leaving the Dartmouth Sportsplex at 9:00am. We would be very happy to have the Halifax Running Club join us for this run again this year. Rami, No route maps available yet. Route is strictly running with markings on the trail; bright pices of tape. No compass or maps are required. Trail, in part, is tight, rocky, slippery, muddy and overal a nice run. It will likely be a 5km loop with one water stop. peter |
